From Community Service to National Recognition: Dr. Binu Varghese Honoured in Mumbai

A National Excellence Award Marks a New Milestone in His Social-Service Journey

Mumbai, September 17, 2026: A ceremony centred on service and community welfare in Mumbai became a significant occasion for social activist Dr. Binu Varghese, who received the National Excellence Award for Outstanding Social Work

The honour was conferred by Maharashtra Governor Shri Jishnu Dev Varma at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, Nariman Point. The programme formed part of the Maharashtra Lokbhavan Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.

Rather than focusing solely on an individual achievement, the event brought attention to the larger idea of social responsibility and the contribution made by people working for communities.

Service Takes Centre Stage

The programme organised by the Maitri Foundation and Varma Foundation featured personalities from social, spiritual and public spheres.

One of the important activities during the event was the distribution of wheelchairs to persons with disabilities by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. The initiative reflected the programme’s emphasis on inclusion, accessibility and support for people who require assistance.

Dr. Binu Varghese also participated in the ceremonial lamp lighting during the programme and shared the stage with the Governor and other invited personalities.

A Gathering of Diverse Voices

The ceremony brought together individuals associated with different areas of public and community life.

Among those present was Dr. Rajeshwar Das Ji Maharaj, also known as Acharya Dr. Rajesh Ojha, a spiritual leader, astrologer and Mahamandleshwar. Mumbai social worker Mustafa Yusufali Gom was also present along with other dignitaries.

The presence of people from different backgrounds reflected the broad nature of the gathering, where social service and community-oriented initiatives formed a central theme.

An Emergency That Highlighted the Importance of Timely Action

Only days before the award ceremony, Dr. Binu Varghese was reportedly involved in alerting authorities about a serious situation in Mira Road.

According to the information provided, the alert concerned a family of four—a husband, wife and their two children—near the flyover opposite Fountain Hotel during the early hours of September 15.

The alert was followed by police action. After receiving instructions from CP Niket Kaushik, Kashigaon Police reportedly reached the location within minutes and rescued the four family members.

The episode illustrated the importance of quickly passing information to the authorities when an emergency is suspected. It also highlighted the role that community members can play by raising an alert and enabling emergency services to respond.

Recognition and Responsibility

For Dr. Binu Varghese, receiving the National Excellence Award represented formal recognition of his social contribution. At the same time, the surrounding events placed attention on a broader message: social work can take many forms, from organised welfare programmes to immediate intervention during an emergency.

The September 17 ceremony therefore became an occasion to recognise service while also celebrating the values of compassion, responsibility and community participation.

Looking Beyond the Ceremony

The award may stand as a notable chapter in Dr. Binu Varghese’s public journey, but the larger significance of the occasion lies in the focus on social responsibility.

From supporting community initiatives to responding to situations requiring immediate attention, social work remains closely connected with people and their everyday challenges. The Mumbai ceremony provided a platform to acknowledge that continuing contribution.
