Dr Surajeet Kumar Patra Receives Bharat Shreshtha Ratna Sanman 2026 for Contributions to Diabetes Care

With more than two decades of clinical experience, research publications and medical education initiatives, the Bhubaneswar-based diabetologist continues to work across patient care and diabetes awareness.

MUMBAI, October 10, 2026: Dr Surajeet Kumar Patra, Senior Consultant Diabetologist at Apollo Sugar Clinics, Bhubaneswar, and lead clinician at Dr Surajeet Patra’s Diabetes Clinic, has been conferred the Bharat Shreshtha Ratna Sanman 2026 at the India Republic Times Leadership Conclave Mumbai 2026. The ceremony was held on October 10 at Bharat Ratna Gaansamragyi Lata Mangeshkar Natya Gruha Auditorium in Mumbai.

The recognition acknowledges his professional work in diabetes care, medical research and patient education over a career spanning more than 20 years.

Clinical Experience and Specialist Training

Dr Patra holds MBBS and MD qualifications and has pursued further professional training through a Fellowship of the American College of Physicians, a Senior Fellowship of the International Diabetes Federation, a Fellowship of Diabetes India and a Fellowship of the Indian Society of Chronomedicine.

His clinical practice focuses on diabetes management and the associated health factors that can influence long-term outcomes. These include blood pressure, cholesterol, weight management and the importance of consistent monitoring and medication adherence.

Research and Medical Education

Alongside his clinical responsibilities, Dr Patra has contributed to medical literature, with more than 30 research publications in national and international medical journals.

In 2022, he contributed Chapter 16 on latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) to the fifth edition of the RSSDI Textbook of Diabetes Mellitus. In March 2026, he also contributed to the Indian Society of Hypertension’s National Guidelines on Home BP Monitoring in India.

He has participated as faculty and speaker at national and international medical conferences, sharing professional knowledge and engaging with discussions on diabetes and related health concerns.

Taking Diabetes Awareness Beyond the Clinic

Patient education remains an important part of Dr Patra’s work. He has organised health camps and participated in television and radio programmes aimed at improving public understanding of diabetes.

His approach highlights the “ABC” of diabetes care: A1c, blood pressure and cholesterol. He also emphasises that medication works alongside lifestyle measures such as appropriate diet, physical activity, weight management, regular monitoring and adherence to treatment.

His earlier recognitions include the DOSTI Young Achiever recognition at DOSTICON, the National Diabesity Conclave in Nagpur in 2026, and recognition from Diabetes India in 2022 for his contribution to diabetes care under challenging conditions.

A Further Focus on Diabetes and Obesity Care

Dr Patra is planning an advanced Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolic Clinic in Bhubaneswar in collaboration with Apollo Sugar Clinics. The proposed initiative is intended to bring diabetes and obesity care together with lifestyle interventions addressing diet, exercise, stress management, sleep hygiene and medication adherence.

The Bharat Shreshtha Ratna Sanman 2026 was presented during the India Republic Times Leadership Conclave Mumbai 2026, an event that also featured the Maharashtra Spotlight Awards. For Dr Patra, the recognition marks another milestone in a career combining clinical practice, research and public awareness initiatives.
